History of Caritas Kosova
Caritas Kosova was founded in 1992, although earlier, several groups in various parishes in Kosovo worked and carried out charitable activities. Given the political situation during the 1990s, the main objective for Caritas Kosova's activity was to distribute humanitarian aid in order to respond to the needs of the poor. Although Caritas Kosova was not officially registered as an NGO, from 1992 to 1999 it played a very important role in favour of people in need.
With the new post-war situation, in 1999, Caritas Kosova methodology of work developed with the support of member organizations of the Caritas Network, which were present in Kosovo during the emergency period. The operation and development of Caritas Kosova was supported by financial contributions as well as technical and professional assistance of Caritas from: France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, CRS (USA), etc.
After the emergency phase, in the last 10 years, various programs and projects as well as the staff of the international Caritas were integrated in the national structure of Caritas Kosova. Since then, Caritas Kosova has gradually developed and created a wide range of activities that take place throughout the territory of the Republic of Kosovo. Today, the territorial extent of Caritas Kosova's activity has expanded enormously, except for the Headquarters which is in Ferizaj, Caritas also has Regional Offices in Prishtina, Prizren, Gjakova, Mitrovica and Leposavic. Also, through the project offices, Caritas Kosova is currently present in: Gjilan, Viti, Shtime, Istog, Suharekë, Fushë Kosovë, Skënderaj, Obiliq, Drenas, etc.
In addition to support from external donors, Caritas Kosova has very good partnerships with central and local state structures such as: Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Employment Agency, as well as various municipalities of Kosovo. Thanks to the experience and reputation of Caritas Kosova, our programs and activities are also supported by the European Union, various development state agencies, embassies, various international organizations, etc.
The strategic areas in which Caritas Kosova is currently focused are: Healthcare and improving access to health services; Improving the social position of people in need and community development for social inclusion and cohesion; Creating preconditions for increasing employment and self-employment; Realization of the right to education and quality education, Assistance in situations of natural disasters and conflicts.
Currently President of Caritas Kosova is the Bishop of Kosovo Mons. Dodë Gjergji, while the General Director of Caritas Kosova is Don Viktor Sopi.
